The Florida Board of Psychology, within the Department of Health, licenses psychologists in Florida. Florida offers a licensure-by-endorsement route for psychologists already licensed elsewhere whose credentials are substantially equivalent to Florida's, with a separate long-experience pathway for applicants with a lengthy licensure history. All applicants sit Florida's Laws and Rules examination, and electronic fingerprinting has been mandatory for new applicants since 2024. Florida Psychology License Requirements
A doctoral degree in psychology from a recognized and accredited institution. For degrees conferred on or after 1 July 2022, Florida requires a PsyD, an EdD in psychology, or a PhD in psychology specifically.
An active psychology license in another U.S. jurisdiction, with verification sent directly by that board.
Credentials substantially equivalent to Florida's education and supervised-practice requirements, as determined by the Board.

For the long-experience route: at least ten years as a licensed psychologist in any U.S. jurisdiction within the twenty-five years preceding application. Typical Processing
Three to six months from a complete filing, assuming out-of-state verifications arrive promptly and the Laws and Rules examination is scheduled without delay.
Recommended Lead Time
Start at least six months before your intended start of practice in Florida.
Endorsement files stall most often on the substantial-equivalence determination rather than on paperwork volume. Applicants trained under an older or non-standard program structure should expect the Board to ask questions, and should have the supporting documentation assembled before the question arrives rather than after.
Where Florida Applications Get Delayed
The July 2022 degree-title rule. For degrees conferred on or after 1 July 2022, Florida specifies a PsyD, an EdD in psychology, or a PhD in psychology. Applicants with a differently-titled doctorate need to establish acceptability before filing rather than assuming it.
Picking the wrong endorsement route. Florida has more than one path, with different experience thresholds. The long-experience route is materially lighter for applicants who qualify, and applicants who file under the standard route without checking do more work than they needed to.
Assuming endorsement skips the exam. It does not. The Florida Laws and Rules examination is required for endorsement applicants too.
Fingerprinting through the wrong vendor. Electronic fingerprinting must go through a Department-approved Livescan provider, and results must be routed to the Department correctly. Prints taken elsewhere generally do not transfer.
Substantial equivalence is a determination, not a formality. The Board evaluates whether your education and supervised practice match Florida's standards, and it can find they do not. Older training histories draw the most scrutiny.
Assuming PSYPACT® removes the need for a Florida license. An APIT® covers telepsychology to clients located in Florida. It does not authorize in-person practice here, and it is not a Florida license.
Renewing Your Florida Psychology License
Renewal Cycle
Florida psychology licenses renew biennially. Verify your specific renewal window with the Board.
CE Requirement
Florida requires continuing education each biennium, including mandated content areas that have included topics such as medical errors, laws and rules, and domestic violence. Requirements are adjusted periodically — verify the current list with the Board rather than repeating the previous cycle.
Late Grace Period
Florida licenses move to delinquent status after the renewal deadline and require additional steps to reactivate. Practising on a delinquent license is not authorized. Verify current terms with the Board.

Which Endorsement Route Applies
Florida has more than one endorsement pathway, and they carry different experience thresholds. The standard route requires an active out-of-state license, credentials substantially equivalent to Florida's, and a minimum period of licensed practice — commonly stated as three years. There is also a long-experience route for applicants with at least ten years as a licensed psychologist in any U.S. jurisdiction within the twenty-five years preceding application, which reduces what has to be documented.
Working out which route you qualify for is worth doing before you file, because the evidence packages differ and the heavier one is a lot of avoidable work for someone who qualified for the lighter one.
The Degree-Title Rule
For doctoral degrees conferred on or after 1 July 2022, Florida specifies a PsyD, an EdD in psychology, or a PhD in psychology. This is a narrower list than some states apply, and applicants holding a differently-titled doctorate — or a degree from a program whose title changed — should establish acceptability with the Board before spending a non-refundable application fee.
Laws and Rules, and Fingerprinting
Endorsement does not exempt you from Florida's Laws and Rules examination; it is required alongside the application. Separately, HB 975 made electronic fingerprinting mandatory for all new applicants from 2024. Prints must go through a Department-approved Livescan provider and be routed to the Department correctly — prints taken for another purpose or in another state generally do not transfer.
PSYPACT® and Florida
Florida is a participating jurisdiction. If you hold a Florida license, Florida can serve as your declared PSYPACT® home state, and an ASPPB E.Passport plus an APIT® then extends your telepsychology practice into every other participating jurisdiction. Given Florida's population and its seasonal-resident patterns, that combination is genuinely useful — a client who winters in Florida and summers in a northern participating state stays reachable without a second license.
Two limits are worth stating plainly. Under the APIT® you must be physically located in your declared home state while delivering telepsychology, so a Florida license held by someone living elsewhere does not make Florida a workable home state. And an APIT® never authorizes in-person practice — for temporary in-person work in another participating state, that is the separate IPC and TAP® route, capped at 30 calendar days per calendar year.
