PSYPACT® and Psychology Licensing in Iowa

A PSYPACT® bill has been introduced in Iowa, but introduced legislation confers no practice authority. A Iowa psychology license is still required to practise here.

Concierge support for Iowa — eligibility screening through issued authorization.

Iowa Has Introduced PSYPACT® Legislation

A bill has been introduced in Iowa, which is worth watching but changes nothing about what you may lawfully do today. Bills are introduced far more often than they are enacted, and enactment is itself a step short of an effective date. An APIT® does not reach clients located in Iowa, and a Iowa license cannot serve as your compact home state. To practise here — in person or by telepsychology — you need a Iowa license.

Compact status changes with legislative sessions and Commission votes. Confirm current participation with the PSYPACT® Commission before relying on it — this page reflects our last verification, not a live feed.

Estimated Timeline

No effective date exists and none is guaranteed. State licensure is the only available route.

Apply for a Iowa psychology license — the only route to practising here today.

Licensed only in Iowa? Consider adding a license in a participating state, which unlocks the compact everywhere else.

We handle Iowa licensure end-to-end.

Eligibility screening, document prep, transcript chasing, board and Commission follow-ups, and renewal tracking.

A PSYPACT® bill has been introduced in Iowa. That is worth watching, and it changes nothing about what you may lawfully do today.

An APIT® does not authorize telepsychology to clients located in Iowa, and a Iowa license cannot serve as your compact home state. To practise here you need a license from Iowa Board of Psychology.

There is a second consequence that catches people. Because the E.Passport requires an active doctoral-level license in at least one participating jurisdiction, a psychologist whose only license is in Iowa cannot use the compact anywhere — not at reduced benefit, but not at all. The fix is to obtain a license in a participating state, which is one of the most common engagements we run.
